About Stainless steel 316
Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which gives better resistance to salt and chlorides than 304. It is the usual choice near the sea, around swimming pools and where road salt is used.
Grades: 1.4401 (316), 1.4404 (316L). Thickness from 1 mm to 40 mm.
Typical uses: Marine fittings, pontoon parts, coastal balustrades, pool surrounds and chemical plant brackets.
Edge and finish
As with 304, expect heat tint on the cut edge. Clean and passivate edges on parts that will be exposed to salt water.

Questions
When do I need 316 instead of 304?
Within a few miles of the coast, near pools or anywhere salt is present. In doubt, 316 is the safer choice for outdoor stainless.
Is 316 dearer to cut?
The cutting time is similar; the material costs more per kilo, so the part price is higher than 304.
